Access to Crewel Pool and the bottom beat

With regard to accessing Crewel Pool I was thinking of asking LAL if they would be prepared to install a ladder just above the gate on the left hand bank (looking downstream). I and some of my friends have been crossing the river at this point last season to avoid By-Pass Hill and found it very convenient despite the steep slide down the bank into the river and the climb back up on the way back. I think that is where I ruined my waders last season! Despite allegedly having vehicular access to Crewel I personally will probably continue camping at Devanah and walking down each night to Crewel and the bottom beat. Are there any other anglers who might choose to use such a ladder? Obviously it wouldn't be worth putting one in just for me!

That is a very good idea and have used this route myself on several occasions wading across and back just above Crewil, instead of going over heart attack hill. A ladder would be an enormous help on the steep bank, especially for those like myself of advancing years, as it can be extremely difficult getting back up the steep slippery bank after a long nights fishing. It would be even more difficult with a bag full of fish and an experience I have yet to enjoy!!!

I to think thats a good idea and would release some parking at crewil. Theres every chance crewil will get busy in the day and evenings it would save alot of cars driving down to the pool and having to drive back if its limited parking

Thanks nighthawk! I hadn't thought of that!

Following on from my earlier post I would like to know if the Club will have the use of the hut on the new stretch and also would like clarification of parking and access to the new bank at Crewil. I know previously, when in private use, anglers could access it directly by car via the pump house road and through the farm and park by the hut. Andrew Holmes (Kingfisher) seemed to think that that would still be the case to park by the hut, but looking at it from the farmer's point of view there will now be far more anglers wanting to fish that side of Crewil and cars etc could be coming and going all night during the summer months. Not sure I would like that if I lived there and perhaps the farmer has already been told about the changeover and understandably may refuse access. Perhaps it would be possible to clarify this for all members well before the season starts so there is no misunderstanding by anglers how to access the opposite bank at Crewil. The map of the new water sent out with the permit letter clearly shows the parking areas and none are by the hut at Crewil.

As the Club Secretary is a follower of this blog then perhaps he will be able to comment on these very valid points that you have raised?

I also think a ladder is a great idea i would fish the bottom beat more. I normally fish above crewil pool or the road bridge because i never liked walking through the wood late at night

About Me

My Photo
Stourport, Worcestershire, United Kingdom
I have 2 main interests which are fly fishing for sewin on the River Tywi and photography! I have fished the Tywi for over 20 years at Llangadog so I know the river very well. Other than fishing the river I am an avid lover of it's wildlife and I can often be seen lurking in the undergrowth trying to photograph some of it's diverse wildlife. The Tywi is a wonderful place to fish and a great place to spend leisure time. It is without question one of my top wildlife habitats but also just a lovely place to relax and get next to nature!
